A black truffle, also known as a truffle fungus, is the fruit-bearing body of microscopic ascomycete fungi, primarily one of the so-called Black Truffles. It is found growing in dark, damp places in North Africa and in the Mediterranean, as well as in some regions of Asia, such as China.

The Black Truffles belongs to the Geocarpophyta group, which means that it belongs to a class of plants called Geocarpales. These include many different kinds of mushrooms. Truffles belong to the Ascomycota subfamily of fungi, or order. Geocarpophyta is divided into four orders: Basaliophyta, Fungi belonging to Basidiomycota, Mycetophyta, and Psathyrella. This order also includes several families, including the Hygrophoraceae (mushrooms having a white "hair"), and the Actinophyta (mushrooms having scales).

The Black Truffle belongs to a genus, the Psidium species, which is a member of the Psidium family. Other common names for this mushroom are the Italian truffle, the Greek truffle, the German truffles, the Spanish truffles, and the Russian truffles. The Black Truffles is a member of a class of mushrooms known as Geomycota, which are fungi having reproductive systems.

The Black Truffle grows in places where the ground is cool and moist enough to keep the spores from drying out, which is why it can be found underground. This mushroom can also grow on dead leaves, which makes it very easy to find them, but it can also be found growing on decaying wood. The mushrooms usually appear after heavy rains have passed. They are known to grow from three to five millimeters in diameter, although specimens may reach more than five centimeters in some areas. Traditionally, truffles were preserved by drying them in barrels, but in recent years the method has been abandoned. Truffles are very salty and have a distinct flavor.
